Dinner Party: Must She Be a Wedge?

The perfect evening for women who love great conversation.

If you have been anywhere near the internet over the last few weeks, it is very likely you have heard about the trial of Lindsay Clancy. Lindsay killed her three children, and the question of whether she did so murderously or involuntarily as a result of postpartum psychosis has become the subject of endless debate among commentators and armchair sleuths.

There is plenty to discuss about the case itself. However, the bigger question we are bringing to this dinner party is: why do women so often end up as wedge issues? Women whose stories become battlegrounds designed to divide us into camps and make us question the morality, intelligence or values of those on the other side.

It happens with cases as serious as Lindsay Clancy’s and controversies as trivial as Meghan Markle’s jam.

Join us for dinner as we discuss the “wedge women”: Lindsay Clancy, Meghan Markle, Amber Heard and, going all the way back to the 1990s, Monica Lewinsky. Why do certain women become lightning rods for much bigger cultural battles? Who benefits from turning them into symbols? And what are the forces that seem determined to keep women utterly divided?
