Holding a Human Heart: A Evening with Transplant Surgeon, Hassiba Smail 🫀
Imagine sitting next to someone on the train at the beginning of a working day. You might be concerned about an upcoming presentation or meeting. The woman next to you is Hassiba Smail and her day will consist of slicing into someone's chest and replacing their beating heart.
If god's walk among us, they're probably surgeons and those who perform heart transplants are the best of the best. Join us for the evening as we meet one of the top heart transplant surgeons in the country, Hassiba Smail.
We'll discuss:
- How she trained to become a heart surgeon
- What an average day in her life looks like
- The tools and skills she needs to perform at such a high level
- How she felt when she held a human heart for the very first time
- The responsibility of handling the greatest gift a human can give
We’ll explore the rhythm of a working day, what it feels like to walk into an operating theatre knowing the stakes and what goes through your mind at the point when surgery begins.
We'll dive into the technicalities, but also discuss the human-side. The responsibility, decision-making, and the strange proximity to life and death that comes with this kind of work.
This is the perfect evening for anyone who has ever wondered what really happens behind the doors of an operating theatre.
