Natasha Devon: Reclaiming Truth in a Polarised World

Feminist campaigner and LBC presenter Natasha Devon spends her Saturday evenings debating the week’s biggest stories with some of the best and worst opinions the country has to offer. Recently, it left her wondering: where has all the nuance gone?

The disappearance of nuance is having a profound impact on almost every area of our lives. It shapes the way politics is conducted and the media reports the news. It affects our mental health and it increasingly influences how we relate to our friends, families and one another.

As the world becomes more polarised, our ability to sit with complexity and consider shades of grey is being eroded. We’re encouraged to pick a side, reach a verdict and find simple answers to questions that are anything but simple.

So how do we resist black-and-white thinking? How can we disagree without immediately dismissing one another? And what might we gain from becoming a little more comfortable with uncertainty?

Natasha, author of The Nuance Drought, joins us at Trouble to explore what we lose when nuance disappears and how we can bring a little more grey back into an increasingly black-and-white world.
