2 NORTH-LONDON LABOUR MPs SHATTERING THE GLASS CEILING
It’s the dawn of a new political era, and - having met many of the Labour representatives from across London - we could leave you in no safer hands than the ones of the women below. We met them, we loved them, and we back them!
DAWN BUTLER:
The woman in the lime-green suit! The third ever Black female MP and first Black woman to speak from the despatch box, Dawn Butler was famously asked to leave parliament after calling Boris Johnson a liar (or speaking her truth, as we Millennials say)! During her sit down with The Trouble Club, she told us, “In the end, I said ‘what else can I do to stop this from happening?’ because [Boris] was just going to continue lying because he is a compulsive liar. And so I stood up […] I called him a liar, the deputy speaker asked me to take it back, and I said ‘no I’m not taking it back, somebody needs to tell the truth in this place’, and then I got sent out of parliament.”
‘I was told to get out of parliament. They said, “are you going to leave or do we need to escort you?”’

Since 2005, Dawn has also been instrumental in modernising parliament (they’re now allowed iPads and handbags - welcome to the 21st Century), via the organisational committee and revolutionising the complaints procedure. It’s safe to say, parliament would look very different today if it weren’t for the efforts of Dawn Butler and her fabulous lime-green suits!

TULIP SIDDIQ:
You may know her as the woman who got British-Iranian author Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe out of detainment in Iran just one week after giving birth to her daughter, Azalea. The instigator of a campaign that lasted 6 years, Tulip is the epitome of an MP who will always put her constituents first, taking Nazanin’s case to every new Prime Minister London saw in that time (3 in total). The story in itself is quite incredible, but Tulip Siddiq is known for much more than this one case - campaigning hard on issues she knows are important to local families, including affordable childcare, climate action and renters’ rights.
‘He said, “I don’t want to stay quiet, I’m going to go and campaign for my wife and I want you to help me”’.

Not only does Tulip advocate for maternity leave in government roles, she has also been known to breastfeed in front of Jeremy Corbyn - a true Trouble slay if we ever heard one!

Having seen what these women have achieved under a Tory rule, we’re so excited for all they plan to unleash in this new Labour landscape.
